Dining out, shopping, and running errands can be an important activity for families. A simple outing in public, however, can turn sour with disruptive child behavior. Children can, however, be taught acceptable behavior and good manners with some simple steps. Set aside time to practice behavior out in public with brief training trips. Review the rules before going out and role-play appropriate manners. Busy kids are good kids….Plan ahead and bring small, interesting toys or activities if appropriate for down times. Keep your kids engaged in an activity with discussion and involvement. Praise good behavior constantly while out. If your child starts to act up, give one direct warning to adjust or initiate a brief removal to regroup. If your child can’t adjust, end the training trip. Once home, offer acknowledgement or a small reward for a successful outing.
